Sávválasztást

Sávválasztást is a traditional Hungarian courtship ritual, where a man would visit a woman's household under the cover of darkness, often to secretly see her or to present her with a gift. This practice was especially popular in rural areas of Hungary and was often associated with the gathering of hay or other agricultural work.

During sávválasztást, the man would typically arrive at the woman's home unannounced, carrying some small gift or token. This could be a bouquet of flowers, a piece of fruit, or some other trinket. The woman's family would then often prepare a hot meal or snack for the visitor, offering them a chance to sit and talk.

The purpose of sávválasztást was often to initiate romantic relationships or to express admiration for someone. It was seen as a way for a man to get to know a woman's family and to make a good impression. In return, the woman's family could gain insight into the man's character and intentions.

Sávválasztást began to decline in popularity in the mid-20th century, as urbanization and modernization altered traditional social and cultural practices. However, it remains a well-known and culturally significant tradition in Hungarian history and folklore. Its practices and customs have influenced the development of modern courtship rituals in Hungary, and its legacy continues to hold a place in the country's romantic and social heritage.
