This process is common in various languages, including Hungarian, where it is frequently observed in informal speech and everyday communication. The primary function of szótagrövidítések is to simplify pronunciation and reduce the effort required to articulate longer words.

These abbreviations are typically formed by taking the initial syllable or syllables of a word and dropping the rest. For example, "autóbusz" (bus) might be shortened to "busz". Similarly, "mobiltelefon" (mobile phone) can become "mobil". The choice of which syllables to retain is often based on phonetic ease and recognizability. The shortened form usually maintains enough of the original word's sound and meaning for speakers to understand.
