Szájsebészet, also known as oral surgery, is a surgical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects of the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. This broad field encompasses a wide range of procedures.

Common procedures in oral surgery include tooth extraction, particularly for wisdom teeth that are impacted or causing problems. It also involves the surgical management of cysts and tumors within the mouth and jaws. Dental implantology, the placement of artificial tooth roots to support replacement teeth, is another significant area. Oral surgeons also treat oral pathologies such as infections, precancerous lesions, and oral cancer.

Reconstructive surgery following trauma or congenital defects, like cleft lip and palate, falls under the purview of oral surgery. Jaw fracture repair and the surgical correction of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are also common. Furthermore, oral surgeons perform biopsies to diagnose oral lesions and manage facial pain conditions. The specialty requires extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and surgical techniques specific to the head and neck region.
