Szigetcsoportokra, often translated as island groups or archipelagos, refers to a collection of islands situated close to each other in a body of water. These formations can vary significantly in size, from a few small islets to vast expanses encompassing numerous islands of varying dimensions. Geologically, island groups can arise from diverse processes. Volcanic activity is a common cause, leading to the formation of island arcs where numerous volcanoes emerge from the seabed. Tectonic plate movement can also create archipelagos as landmasses are uplifted or rifted apart. Erosion and sedimentation processes can contribute to the formation and shaping of islands within a group, particularly in shallower waters.

The distribution of island groups is global, found in oceans, seas, and even large lakes. The ecological and biological characteristics of island groups are often unique. Due to their isolation, many archipelagos host endemic species, meaning species found nowhere else on Earth.
