Szennyvízrendszerekben refers to sewage systems or wastewater management systems in Hungarian. These systems are designed to collect, transport, and treat domestic and industrial wastewater to prevent pollution of the environment and protect public health. The process typically begins with the collection of wastewater from homes, businesses, and industries through a network of underground pipes. This network is gravity-driven for the most part, with pumping stations used to move wastewater uphill or across longer distances.

Once collected, the wastewater travels to a wastewater treatment plant. Here, it undergoes a series of physical, biological, and sometimes chemical processes to remove pollutants. The initial stage often involves screening to remove large solids, followed by sedimentation to allow smaller solids to settle out. Biological treatment then uses microorganisms to break down organic matter. Further processes may include disinfection to kill harmful bacteria and viruses before the treated water, known as effluent, is discharged into rivers, lakes, or the sea, or reused for non-potable purposes. The solid material removed during treatment, called sludge, is also treated and often disposed of in landfills, incinerated, or used as fertilizer after appropriate processing.
