Szemfájdalom

Szemfájdalom, or eye pain, is a common symptom that can arise from a variety of causes affecting the eye or surrounding structures. The pain can range in intensity from a mild discomfort to severe and debilitating. It can be described as sharp, dull, aching, or throbbing. Often, the location of the pain can provide clues to its origin. Pain that is localized to the surface of the eye might suggest issues like a corneal abrasion, foreign body, or conjunctivitis. Deeper pain, sometimes felt behind the eye, could indicate more serious conditions such as uveitis, optic neuritis, or even angle-closure glaucoma.

Several factors can contribute to szemfájdalom. Ocular surface diseases, including dry eye syndrome, are frequent culprits, leading to irritation and discomfort. Infections, such as bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, can also cause significant pain, redness, and discharge. Trauma to the eye, whether from an injury or a foreign object, is another common cause of pain. Inflammatory conditions within the eye, like iritis or uveitis, can result in pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. Furthermore, systemic conditions or neurological issues can sometimes manifest as eye pain.

Diagnosis of the cause of szemfájdalom typically involves a thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. This may include visual acuity testing, examination of the eye's surface and interior, and sometimes imaging studies. Prompt medical attention is recommended for any new or worsening eye pain, especially if accompanied by changes in vision, redness, or light sensitivity, as some causes can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.
