Szagérzékelés, also known as olfaction, is the sense that allows us to detect and interpret smells. It is a complex process involving specialized sensory cells in the nose and sophisticated processing in the brain. When volatile chemical compounds, called odorants, are inhaled, they dissolve in the mucus lining of the nasal cavity. These odorants then bind to specific olfactory receptors on the cilia of olfactory receptor neurons. Each receptor neuron typically expresses only one type of olfactory receptor.
