Székletzsír

Székletzsír refers to the presence of excess fat in the stool. Normally, a small amount of fat is present in feces, but a significant increase, known as steatorrhea, can indicate an underlying medical condition. This condition is characterized by stools that are typically bulky, pale, greasy, and foul-smelling due to the undigested fat.

Several factors can lead to székletzsír. Malabsorption is a primary cause, where the body is unable to properly absorb fats from the diet. This can occur due to problems with the pancreas, such as chronic pancreatitis or cystic fibrosis, which reduce the production of digestive enzymes needed to break down fats. Liver or gallbladder diseases, affecting bile production or flow, can also impair fat digestion and absorption. Conditions affecting the small intestine's lining, like celiac disease or Crohn's disease, can damage the absorptive surface.

Diagnosis of székletzsír usually involves a stool test to quantify the amount of fat. Further investigations may be required to determine the specific cause, which can include blood tests, imaging studies, or endoscopic procedures. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying condition responsible for the fat malabsorption. Dietary modifications, such as reducing fat intake or supplementing with medium-chain triglycerides, might be recommended in some cases.
