The primary goal of deep freezing is to halt all biological activity, thereby preserving the sample for extended periods without significant degradation.

The success of syväjäädytetyt relies on vitrification, a process where water within the cells transforms into a glass-like amorphous solid rather than forming damaging ice crystals.
