Syväaivostimulaattori, commonly known as DBS, is a neurosurgical procedure involving the implantation of a medical device that sends electrical impulses to specific targets in the brain. This device, often referred to as a brain pacemaker, consists of implanted electrodes, a pulse generator (battery pack), and connecting wires. The electrodes are surgically placed in precise areas of the brain, and the generator, typically implanted in the chest or abdomen, is programmed to deliver controlled electrical stimulation.

DBS is primarily used to treat movement disorders that are not adequately controlled by medication. Conditions such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia are common indications. It can help alleviate symptoms like tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, and involuntary muscle contractions. The electrical stimulation is thought to modulate abnormal brain activity that underlies these conditions.

The procedure itself involves careful planning, including imaging scans to identify the target brain region. The electrodes are then surgically implanted under local or general anesthesia. Following surgery, the pulse generator is activated and programmed by a neurologist to optimize symptom relief while minimizing side effects. The stimulation parameters can be adjusted over time as needed. While DBS can significantly improve quality of life for many patients, it is not a cure and requires ongoing management. Potential risks include surgical complications, hardware issues, and stimulation-related side effects.
