Syvyyssuodatusta

Syvyyssuodatusta, often translated as depth filtration, is a filtration method that removes solid particles from a fluid by passing the fluid through a thick, porous filter medium. Unlike surface filtration, where particles are trapped on the surface of the filter, depth filtration traps particles within the tortuous paths of the filter material. This allows for a higher dirt-holding capacity and a longer filter life, as the particles are distributed throughout the filter's depth rather than accumulating on a single layer.

The filter media used in depth filtration can be made from various materials, including cellulose fibers, synthetic polymers, or diatomaceous earth. The pore structure of these materials is designed to create a network of interconnected channels that progressively decrease in size, effectively capturing particles of different dimensions. The filtration process can be achieved through different mechanisms, such as straining, inertial impaction, diffusion, and adsorption.
