Sysselsatte

Sysselsatta is a term used in Swedish statistics to denote people who are employed. In official labour market statistics, a sysselsatt is a person who, during a specified reference period, performed paid work or was temporarily away from work in their job, and includes both employees and self-employed persons. The category covers full-time and part-time work, and also usually includes those on short-term leave who still have a job to return to.

The concept is used to derive the employment rate, or sysselsättningsgrad, which is the share of the population that is employed. Measurements typically focus on a defined age range, commonly 15 to 74 years, though some datasets use 15 to 64 or other bounds. Data are gathered in national statistics offices such as Statistics Sweden (SCB) and are often aligned with international standards, such as Eurostat’s Labour Force Survey, to enable comparisons across countries.

Sysselsatta are contrasted with the unemployed (personer som inte arbetar men som söker arbete) and with those outside the labor force (e.g., students, retirees, homemakers). The indicator is used to analyze trends in the labor market, including gender gaps, regional differences, and changes over time. Definitions can vary slightly between surveys or over time, so the exact composition of the sysselsatta should be checked in the accompanying methodological notes of a given dataset.
