The core idea behind these methods is to systematically remove variables or terms from an equation or system of equations until a simpler form is reached, often leading to the solution or a more manageable representation.

In the context of solving linear systems, Gaussian elimination is a prominent example. It involves a series of row operations to transform the augmented matrix of a system into row-echelon form, from which the solution can be easily determined through back-substitution. Similarly, Gauss-Jordan elimination further reduces the matrix to reduced row-echelon form, directly yielding the solution without the need for back-substitution.

For polynomial equations, methods like resultants and Gröbner bases employ elimination principles. Resultants can be used to determine conditions under which two polynomials share a common root, effectively eliminating a variable from their equations. Gröbner bases provide a systematic way to reduce a system of polynomial equations to a simpler equivalent system where variables can be eliminated sequentially, similar to Gaussian elimination for linear systems.
