Syntenin1

Syntenin-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SYT1 gene. This gene is located on chromosome 17q21.3. Syntenin-1 is a member of the syntenin family of proteins, which are involved in the regulation of synaptic transmission and plasticity. The syntenin family includes three members: syntenin-1, syntenin-2, and syntenin-3.

Syntenin-1 is primarily expressed in the brain, particularly in neurons. It is involved in the regulation of synaptic transmission by interacting with other proteins, such as PSD-95 and SAP97, which are components of the postsynaptic density. Syntenin-1 also plays a role in the regulation of synaptic plasticity, which is the ability of synapses to strengthen or weaken in response to neural activity.

Mutations in the SYT1 gene have been associated with several neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and intellectual disability. These mutations can lead to abnormal levels of syntenin-1 protein, which can disrupt synaptic function and contribute to the symptoms of these disorders.

Syntenin-1 is also a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of neurological disorders. Small molecule inhibitors of syntenin-1 have been shown to reduce synaptic transmission and plasticity, suggesting that they may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of conditions such as epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease.
