Synonymisch is an adjective used in linguistics and lexicography to describe a relation between words or expressions that share a similar or identical meaning in a given language or context. Words that are synonymisch can often substitute for each other without substantially altering the propositional content of a statement, although exact synonymy is uncommon because meaning is influenced by context, nuance, and usage.

Etymology and scope: The term is formed from the Greek roots syn- “together” and onoma “name,” with the German suffix -isch. It parallels the English term synonymic and appears in scholarly and dictionary-related writing to denote the property of being a synonym or closely related in sense.

Linguistic properties: Synonymisch relations are context-dependent, varying with register, tone, and collocation. Two items may be synonymisch in a neutral descriptive sentence but not in a highly specialized or idiomatic one. Subtle differences in connotation, formality, or habitual collocations create near-synonyms rather than perfect synonyms, and some words are only partially interchangeable.

Examples and limitations: In German, groß and riesig can be considered synonymisch in describing size, albeit with different emphasis. Auto and Fahrzeug are related but not fully interchangeable, as Fahrzeug is a broader category and formality differs. In practice, synonymisch judgments require careful consideration of context and discourse goals.
