The primary function of saliva is lubrication and moistening of the oral cavity, which aids in speech and swallowing. Enzymes present in saliva, such as amylase and lipase, initiate the digestive process by breaking down carbohydrates and fats, respectively. Saliva also acts as a buffer, helping to neutralize acids produced by bacteria, thereby protecting tooth enamel from erosion and preventing dental caries.

Furthermore, saliva has antimicrobial properties. It contains lysozyme, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulin A, which help to control the growth of harmful microorganisms in the mouth and prevent infections. Saliva also plays a role in taste perception by dissolving food molecules, allowing them to interact with taste receptors on the tongue. The continuous secretion of saliva throughout the day and night is essential for maintaining oral health and facilitating digestion. Conditions that impair salivary flow, such as Sjögren's syndrome or certain medications, can lead to xerostomia, commonly known as dry mouth, which can have significant negative consequences for oral health.
