Syklöaddition

Syklöaddition refers to a class of pericyclic reactions where two or more unsaturated organic molecules combine to form a cyclic compound. In this process, a ring is created through a concerted, synchronous rearrangement of electrons. The key characteristic of syklöaddition is that the bonds are rearranged simultaneously, without the formation of any intermediate species. This concerted nature implies that the reaction proceeds through a cyclic transition state.

The most common and widely studied type of syklöaddition is the Diels-Alder reaction, a [4+2] cycloaddition involving a conjugated diene and a dienophile. Other examples include [2+2] cycloadditions, [3+2] cycloadditions, and higher-order cycloadditions. The regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of these reactions are often predictable and can be controlled by the electronic and steric properties of the reacting molecules, as well as the reaction conditions.

Syklöaddition reactions are of great importance in organic synthesis due to their ability to efficiently form cyclic structures with high control over stereochemistry. They are frequently employed in the construction of complex molecules, including natural products and pharmaceuticals. The understanding and application of syklöaddition reactions are deeply rooted in the principles of molecular orbital theory, particularly the Woodward-Hoffmann rules, which predict the feasibility and stereochemical outcome of pericyclic reactions based on the symmetry of the molecular orbitals involved in the transition state.
