Sydänläppäimistä, also known as heart valves, are essential components of the heart that regulate blood flow by opening and closing to allow blood to move through the heart chambers. There are four main types of heart valves: the mitral valve, tricuspid valve, aortic valve, and pulmonary valve. Each valve has a specific function and location within the heart.

The mitral valve, located between the left atrium and left ventricle, and the tricuspid valve, located between the right atrium and right ventricle, are both atrioventricular valves. These valves prevent the backflow of blood from the ventricles to the atria during ventricular contraction.

The aortic valve, situated between the left ventricle and the aorta, and the pulmonary valve, located between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, are both semilunar valves. These valves open to allow blood to flow from the ventricles to the major arteries and close to prevent backflow during ventricular relaxation.

Heart valves can be affected by various conditions, including valve stenosis (narrowing), regurgitation (leakage), and prolapse (incomplete closure). These conditions can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain. Treatment options for heart valve disorders may include medication, lifestyle changes, or surgical intervention, depending on the severity and type of condition.
