Syanidimyrkytysten, commonly known as cyanide poisoning, refers to an acute or chronic exposure to toxic amounts of cyanide. Cyanide is a rapid-acting poison that interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen. This disruption occurs at the cellular level, specifically by inhibiting the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, which is crucial for cellular respiration. Without oxygen, cells cannot produce energy, leading to rapid dysfunction and death.

Sources of cyanide exposure can be varied. In industrial settings, it can occur through contact with chemicals used in mining, electroplating, and the production of plastics and pesticides. Accidental ingestion of certain plants, such as cassava (if not properly prepared), or exposure to specific pesticides can also lead to poisoning. Furthermore, cyanide is a component of tobacco smoke and can be produced during the combustion of certain materials, making smoke inhalation from fires a potential route of exposure.

Symptoms of cyanide poisoning can manifest quickly and vary in severity depending on the dose and route of exposure. Mild symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, and rapid breathing. More severe poisoning can lead to confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness, respiratory failure, and ultimately, death. The characteristic "bitter almond" smell on the breath is sometimes associated with cyanide poisoning, although not everyone can detect this odor.

Diagnosis relies on clinical signs and symptoms, coupled with laboratory tests that measure cyanide levels in the blood. Treatment involves immediate removal from the source of exposure and the administration of specific antidotes. These antidotes work by either binding to cyanide, preventing it from reaching the mitochondria, or by restoring the body's ability to use oxygen. Prompt medical attention is critical for survival.
