Svetlosti

Svetlosti (with diacritics: světlosti) is a term used in Czech and Slovak to denote light, brightness, or illumination. In everyday and scientific language it covers both the presence of light in a scene and the perceptual and physical qualities of that light, including natural daylight and artificial illumination.

Etymology and scope: The word derives from Slavic roots related to seeing and radiant energy. In non-diacritic texts it is often written as svetlosti, but the diacritic form světlosti is common in standard Czech and Slovak.

Physical concepts: Light is electromagnetic radiation visible to the human eye. Photons carry energy, and the intensity and distribution of light from a source define its photometric properties. Luminous flux (measured in lumens) describes total light output, while luminous intensity (candelas) describes light in a given direction. Illuminance (lux) measures how much light reaches a surface, and luminance (candelas per square meter) describes how bright that surface appears.
