Suurtähdistä refers to constellations, which are groupings of stars that form recognizable patterns in the night sky. Throughout history, various cultures have identified and named these patterns, often associating them with mythological figures, animals, or everyday objects. The International Astronomical Union currently recognizes 88 official constellations, a standardized list that helps astronomers locate and refer to celestial objects.

The apparent proximity of stars within a constellation is an illusion; these stars are often at vastly different distances from Earth. The shapes we perceive are determined by our perspective from Earth. Historically, constellations served practical purposes, aiding in navigation and timekeeping, as their appearance in the sky changes with the seasons. Many constellations are prominent in the night sky, such as Ursa Major (Great Bear), which contains the Big Dipper asterism, and Orion, the Hunter, known for its distinct belt of three stars.

Different cultures have developed their own sets of constellations, sometimes with entirely different interpretations of the same star groupings. For example, while Western astronomy largely uses the Greek-derived names and shapes, Chinese astronomy has its own set of asterisms and celestial divisions. Modern astronomy uses constellations as fundamental regions of the sky for cataloging celestial objects, with each point in the sky belonging to one of the 88 defined constellations.
