Suuralueiden

Suuralueiden is a Finnish-language term that translates roughly to “large regions” or “major regions.” It is used in geography, regional planning, and public administration to refer to broad territorial units that are larger than individual municipalities but not necessarily a fixed formal administrative category.

The term is largely descriptive, and the exact boundaries and number of suuralueiden vary depending on the context and the authorities defining them. In practice, a suuralue might encompass several municipalities or parts of a city that share common economic links, commuting patterns, environmental considerations, or infrastructure needs. They are typically used to organize cooperation and planning across multiple municipalities to address regional challenges and opportunities.

Suuralueiden are distinct from formal administrative divisions such as maakunta (regions) or seutukunta (functional regions) and from EU statistical classifications like NUTS, which are defined for legal or funding purposes.
