Suuntapolarisointi

Suuntapolarisointi refers to the phenomenon of polarization of light, specifically focusing on the orientation of the electric field vector. In electromagnetic waves like light, the electric and magnetic fields oscillate perpendicularly to the direction of propagation. Polarization describes the preferred direction of these oscillations.

Unpolarized light, such as that from the sun or a typical light bulb, has electric field vectors oriented in all possible directions perpendicular to the direction of travel. When light is polarized, these oscillations are restricted to a specific plane. This can occur through various mechanisms. Reflection from a non-metallic surface, like water or glass, can polarize light. The degree of polarization depends on the angle of incidence; at the Brewster angle, the reflected light is completely polarized.

Another method is transmission through a polarizing filter. These filters contain long-chain molecules that absorb light waves oscillating parallel to their orientation, allowing only waves oscillating perpendicular to them to pass through. Scattering of light by particles in the atmosphere, as seen in the blue sky, also results in polarized light. The analysis of polarization can reveal information about the surface properties of objects, the composition of the atmosphere, and even the internal structure of materials. Polarized sunglasses, for instance, work by filtering out horizontally polarized light, which is often reflected glare from surfaces like roads and water.
