Suunnittelusääntöjen, the design rules or principles, refer to the general guidelines that guide visual, functional and experiential aspects of products, systems and environments. These principles form the foundation of design theory and practice in architecture, industrial design, graphic communication, web and interaction design, and many other disciplines. Translating the ideas from praxis into repeatable rules allows designers to create coherent and user‑friendly artefacts, while ensuring consistency across scales and contexts.

Key principles in contemporary design include hierarchy, wherein information and visual elements are structured from most to least important; balance, which distributes visual weight to achieve aesthetic stability; proximity, where related items are grouped; contrast that helps distinguish elements; alignment, which aligns edges for spatial coherence; and consistency, enforcing a common language throughout a product or brand. In user‑interface design Nielsen’s heuristics, such as visibility of system status, affordances, error prevention, and user control, are widely adopted as benchmarks for usability. Gestalt laws—including similarity, closure, and figure‑ground contrast—describe perceptual organization and inform layout decisions. In product design, ergonomic rules like Fitts’s law that governs target accessibility and movement time, remain central for usability and human‑centred engineering.

Finnish design culture, exemplified by figures such as Alvar Aalto and companies like Marimekko, has historically emphasized simplicity, functionality and sustainable practices, shaping a national set of design values. These values echo in the modern Finnish design studio scene that champions clean lines, respect for user context, and minimal environmental impact. While each design domain tailors the prioritization of principles, the overarching goal remains the same: creating solutions that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also effective, accessible and enduring.
