Sustenpass

Sustenpass is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps, connecting the cantons of Bern and Valais. Its official elevation is 2,264 meters (7,428 feet) above sea level. The pass is situated between the Sustenlimi and Gwächtenhorn peaks and forms part of the route between Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland and Göschenen in the canton of Uri.

The road over Sustenpass, the Sustenpassstrasse, is a significant mountain pass road in Switzerland. It is a popular route for tourists and motorcyclists, offering spectacular views of glaciers, alpine lakes, and surrounding peaks. The road is typically open from June to October, depending on snow conditions. It features a series of switchbacks and tunnels, characteristic of Alpine road construction.

Historically, Sustenpass has been a passage for centuries, though not as extensively used as some other Alpine crossings. The modern road was built between 1938 and 1945. Its construction was a notable engineering achievement for its time, particularly given the challenging terrain. The pass is also a gateway to hiking trails and climbing routes in the Sustenmassif. The nearby Stein Glacier is a popular destination for ice climbing and glacier tours. The Sustenpass area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch".
