Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is a type of abnormal heart rhythm characterized by a rapid heart rate originating above the ventricles, specifically in the atria or atrioventricular (AV) node. This condition is often referred to as supraventricular because the abnormal electrical signals that cause the rapid heartbeat originate in the upper chambers of the heart, rather than in the lower chambers (ventricles).

SVT is typically classified into two main categories: paroxysmal and persistent. Paroxysmal SVT occurs in episodes that last for a short period and can be terminated spontaneously or with medical intervention. Persistent SVT, on the other hand, is a longer-lasting condition that may require more aggressive treatment to restore a normal heart rhythm.

Common symptoms of SVT include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, and fatigue. The rapid heart rate can sometimes be felt as a pounding or racing sensation in the chest. In severe cases, SVT can lead to symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, or even cardiac arrest.

Diagnosis of SVT often involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to identify the abnormal heart rhythm and determine its origin. Treatment options may include medications such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, or antiarrhythmic drugs. In some cases, procedures like catheter ablation may be necessary to correct the underlying heart tissue abnormalities that cause the rapid heartbeat. Lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding triggers like caffeine or alcohol, may also be recommended to manage the condition.
