Suojelukirjat, often translated as "protection books" or "amulet books," are a unique category of handwritten manuscripts originating primarily from the Finnish folk tradition, particularly from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. These books were not intended for public reading or scholarly pursuits but served as personal magical texts, believed to offer protection, healing, or other beneficial effects to their owners.

The content of suojelukirjat varied widely, encompassing a diverse range of magical practices and beliefs. Common inclusions were incantations, prayers, charms, recipes for medicinal concoctions, and prophecies. These texts often drew from a syncretic blend of Christian beliefs, pagan folklore, and older magical traditions. For instance, biblical verses might be combined with ancient spells or pagan deities invoked alongside Christian saints.

The creation and use of suojelukirjat were deeply personal. They were typically handwritten by individuals, often in rural communities, who possessed a perceived knowledge of folk magic and healing. These books were considered highly valuable and were often passed down through families or gifted to trusted individuals. The belief was that by possessing and reciting the contents of the suojelukirja, one could ward off illness, misfortune, evil spirits, or even physical harm.

The practice of creating and using suojelukirjat has largely faded with modernization and changing belief systems, but surviving examples offer invaluable insights into the folk magic, religious practices, and everyday concerns of past Finnish populations.
