Threats that call for suojautumis range from natural hazards such as floods and severe storms to industrial accidents, chemical, biological, radiological threats, and in some contexts armed conflicts. The preferred response is usually sheltering indoors to limit exposure, with evacuation or relocation considered when authorities deem it safer to move to a different location. The approach emphasizes staying informed and following official guidance.

Common protective actions during sheltering include moving to an interior room away from exterior walls, closing doors and windows, and turning off ventilation to reduce the inflow of outside air. Sealing gaps with damp cloths can help limit dust or contaminants. It is advised to stay calm, conserve energy, use a battery-powered radio or mobile alerts for updates, and avoid unnecessary use of phones to keep lines available for emergency communications. Avoiding contact with potentially contaminated surfaces and following decontamination instructions after a threat is also part of suojautumis.

Preparedness is a key component. Individuals are encouraged to maintain an emergency kit with water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a radio, a whistle, and essential medicines. Families should plan meeting points and practice sheltering and evacuation procedures.
