Suojatekijöihin, a Finnish term, translates to "protective factors" in English. This concept is used in various fields, particularly in psychology, sociology, and public health, to describe conditions or attributes that mitigate the risk of negative outcomes and promote well-being. Protective factors can exist at individual, family, community, and societal levels.

At the individual level, protective factors might include positive self-esteem, problem-solving skills, and a sense of optimism. For families, strong parental support, clear communication, and a stable home environment are considered protective. In communities, access to resources, positive peer groups, and safe neighborhoods can act as protective factors. Societal protective factors encompass supportive policies, access to education and healthcare, and cultural norms that promote resilience.

The presence of protective factors can buffer the impact of stressors and risk factors, such as poverty, trauma, or genetic predispositions, thereby reducing the likelihood of developing mental health problems, engaging in risky behaviors, or experiencing other adverse life events. Understanding and strengthening protective factors is a key strategy in prevention and intervention efforts aimed at promoting resilience and positive development across the lifespan.
