Sundiks

Sundiks are small, prefabricated dwelling units designed for temporary or supplementary housing. They are typically one- to two-room structures that can be installed on existing lots as accessory dwelling units or as stand-alone micro-houses. Built from timber-frame or modular panels, sundiks emphasize ease of transport, rapid installation, and energy efficiency. Common features include compact kitchens, integrated sanitation, and modular furnishings to maximize use of space. Some models offer solar panels or heat pumps for off-grid or low-energy operation.

Sundiks originated in Nordic and Northern European markets in the early 21st century as a response to urban housing pressures and the need for flexible, lower-cost housing options. They are produced by specialized prefab manufacturers and assembled on-site with minimal labor. Over time, standards and permits have evolved; many jurisdictions regulate size, foundation requirements, fire safety, and energy performance.

Usage includes student residences, temporary construction-site housing, seasonal workers, and as accessory dwelling units on single-family lots. They are valued for space efficiency and reduced construction time but face criticism about long-term stability, neighborhood impact, and affordability if misused. Maintenance and insulation are important for comfort in variable climates.
