Sulkeutumisjärjestys is a Finnish term that translates to "order of operations" in English. It refers to the set of rules that dictate the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed in an expression to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. The generally accepted order of operations is often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS or BODMAS. PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BODMAS uses Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).

Following this order, operations within parentheses or brackets are always performed first. Next, exponents or orders are calculated. Then, multiplication and division are carried out in the order they appear from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right.
