Sulfonihappu

Sulfonihappu, often referred to as sulfonic acid, is a class of organosulfur compounds. Its general formula is R-SO2-OH, where R represents an organic substituent. The functional group characteristic of sulfonic acids is the sulfonyl group (-SO2-) attached to a hydroxyl group (-OH). These compounds are strong acids, often stronger than sulfuric acid itself, due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the sulfonyl group.

The physical properties of sulfonic acids vary widely depending on the nature of the organic substituent. Simple alkylsulfonic acids are often soluble in water, while aromatic sulfonic acids can have varying solubilities. They readily react with bases to form sulfonate salts. The presence of the highly polar sulfonyl group also contributes to their reactivity and utility in various chemical transformations.
