Suihkujäähdytys, which translates to "spray cooling" in English, is a heat transfer technique that utilizes a spray of liquid droplets to cool a hot surface. This method is particularly effective for applications requiring rapid and efficient cooling, such as in metallurgy, electronics manufacturing, and certain industrial processes. The effectiveness of spray cooling is influenced by several factors, including the droplet size, velocity, flow rate, and the thermophysical properties of the liquid used, as well as the characteristics of the hot surface.

The principle behind spray cooling involves the evaporation of the liquid droplets upon contact with the hot surface. This phase change from liquid to vapor absorbs a significant amount of heat, thereby lowering the surface temperature. The continuous impingement of fresh droplets replenishes the cooling medium and helps to remove the generated vapor, maintaining a high heat transfer rate. Different spray nozzle designs, such as flat fan, full cone, and hollow cone nozzles, can be employed to optimize the spray pattern and droplet distribution for specific cooling requirements.

Water is the most commonly used liquid for spray cooling due to its availability, low cost, and excellent heat transfer properties. However, other liquids like refrigerants or specialized fluids may be used depending on the operating temperature range and the chemical compatibility with the surface being cooled. The design of the spray cooling system also includes considerations for fluid delivery, pressure regulation, and potentially recirculation and filtration of the cooling liquid.
