Suessionnes

Suessionnes refers to the ancient Belgic tribe who inhabited the region of Gaul that is now the Aisne department of France. Their territory was centered around the city of Noviodunum, which is modern-day Soissons. The Suessionnes were a prominent tribe within the Belgic confederation and were known for their military strength.

During the Gallic Wars, the Suessionnes were among the tribes who resisted Julius Caesar's invasion of Gaul. They fielded a significant number of warriors and participated in major battles against the Roman legions. Despite their initial resistance, they were eventually subdued by Caesar's forces.

Following the Roman conquest, the Suessionnes were integrated into the Roman province of Gallia Belgica. Their capital, Noviodunum, became an important Roman administrative and military center. The name "Soissons" is a direct descendant of the original name of their capital, Noviodunum Suessionum. The Suessionnes, as a distinct tribal entity, gradually assimilated into the broader Gallo-Roman culture. Their legacy is primarily preserved through the writings of Roman historians, such as Julius Caesar himself, who documented their existence and their role in the Gallic Wars.
