Subsumtion

Subsumtion, usually spelled subsumption, is a relation of inclusion between concepts, classes, or rules. It describes a situation in which one item subsumes another: every instance of the latter is also an instance of the former. In set-theoretic terms, if Y is a subset of X, then X subsumes Y; X is the generalization and Y the specialization.

In logic and computer science, subsumption commonly appears in hierarchical classification. In a taxonomy, Mammal is a subclass of Animal, so Animal subsumes Mammal; equivalently, Mammal is subsumed by Animal. In description logics and ontologies, concept subsumption expresses that one class is a superconcept of another, corresponding to subclass relationships in programming and data modeling.

In rule-based systems, subsumption is used to manage rules and inferences. A rule R1 may subsume another rule R2 if R1 is at least as general as R2 and can produce the same conclusions under broader conditions. Subsumption checks help reduce redundancy and simplify rule bases.

In law and philosophy, subsumption refers to applying a general rule to a particular case: the case is subsumed under the rule. This usage captures the idea of mapping specific situations into a universal framework.
