Set theory, or set-theoretic foundations, is the branch of mathematical logic that studies sets, collections of objects, and the relations among them. It provides the formal language and axiomatic basis for most of modern mathematics. The basic notion is the set, with operations and relations such as membership (whether x is an element of a set), subset inclusion, union, intersection, and the power set.

Historically, Georg Cantor established set theory in the late 19th century, introducing cardinal and ordinal numbers and the study of infinity. To avoid paradoxes, axiomatic set theory was developed in the 20th century, with Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory and the Axiom of Choice (ZFC) becoming standard in most contexts.

The core of ZFC consists of axioms such as extensionality, pairing, union, power set, infinity, separation, replacement, foundation, and choice. Using these axioms, one builds a cumulative hierarchy Vα of sets, where each level contains the sets definable from earlier levels via power sets and unions.

Advanced themes include transfinite ordinal and cardinal arithmetic, large cardinals, inner model theory, forcing for proving independence results, and descriptive set theory, which analyzes complexity of sets in spaces like the real line.

Applications: set theory serves as a common foundation for most mathematical disciplines, providing rigorous formalization, enabling analysis of infinite processes, and contributing to the study of logic, topology, analysis, and computer science.
