Subparadigms

Subparadigms represent a conceptual framework within a larger, established paradigm. They are not entirely separate from the dominant paradigm but rather offer a more specific or specialized approach to understanding or solving problems within its broader scope. Think of a paradigm as a fundamental way of looking at the world, like Newtonian physics. A subparadigm might then be a specific area within Newtonian physics, such as celestial mechanics or fluid dynamics, which develops its own specialized theories, methods, and applications while still adhering to the core principles of the parent paradigm.

The emergence of subparadigms often occurs when the main paradigm encounters limitations or when researchers identify distinct subsets of phenomena that require tailored explanations. These specialized approaches can lead to significant advancements within their niche, sometimes even challenging or refining the parent paradigm's assumptions. However, they remain indebted to the foundational concepts that define the larger paradigm. The relationship is hierarchical, with subparadigms existing as extensions or modifications of a more general, overarching framework. Examples can be found across various disciplines, from subfields within biology that focus on specific cellular processes to particular schools of thought within philosophy that elaborate on broader philosophical movements.
