Sublines

Sublines is the plural of subline, a term used in several fields to denote a line, trace, or lineage that is subordinate to a primary line. The precise meaning depends on the discipline, and there is no single universal definition.

In biology and medicine, a subline refers to a cell line descended from a parent line, produced by cloning, selection, or adaptation. Sublines may accumulate genetic or epigenetic differences that affect growth rate, morphology, marker expression, or drug sensitivity. They are used to study intraline heterogeneity, model disease evolution, and assess treatment responses.

In mathematics, particularly finite and projective geometry, a subline is a subset of points on a projective line that itself forms a projective line over a subfield. For example, in a line defined over a finite field GF(q^n), a subline may be isomorphic to a projective line over GF(q^m) for m dividing n. Sublines help analyze incidence structures and are relevant to automorphism groups and combinatorial constructions.

In telecommunications, a subline is a secondary telephone line connected to a main line, used to provide an additional voice path, fax, or data channel. Sublines are common in business installations and can be configured with separate dialing invariants or call routing from a single physical access point.
