Subkontinuumeita, meaning "subcontinents" in Finnish, is a conceptual term used in geography and sometimes in historical or political contexts to refer to a large, geographically distinct landmass that is smaller than a continent but significantly larger than a peninsula. These are typically defined by natural boundaries such as mountain ranges, oceans, or major river systems, setting them apart from surrounding land or water.

While the term is not as formally defined as "continent," it often evokes regions like the Indian subcontinent, the Arabian Peninsula, or Indochina. The Indian subcontinent, for instance, is bordered by the Himalayas to the north and surrounded by the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal, making it a clear example of a subcontinental landmass. The Arabian Peninsula, similarly, is defined by its desert interior and surrounding seas.

The use of "subkontinuumeita" can also extend to areas that have a strong sense of cultural or historical identity, even if their geographical boundaries are less clear-cut. In some discussions, areas like Mesoamerica or even parts of Eastern Europe might be considered subcontinents due to their unique historical trajectories and cultural developments.
