Subjektsled

Subjektsled is a term used in Swedish grammar to describe the syntactic unit that functions as the subject of a sentence or clause. It denotes who or what the sentence is about and typically governs the relation to the predicate.

Subjektsled can take several forms. The most common is a nominal phrase (NP), such as a noun or a pronoun: Katten sov, Hon läser en bok. A subjektsled can also be a clause that acts as the subject, for example a finite clause like Att resa till Sverige vore roligt, or an infinitival clause like Att läsa böcker kräver tid. In certain constructions, a dummy or expletive subject may be used, as in Det regnar, where Det serves as a formal subject even though there is no explicit noun performing the action.

Position and agreement play roles in identifying the subjektsled. In canonical main clauses, the subject typically precedes the finite verb, though questions involve subject–verb inversion. The subjektsled governs not so much person agreement as the number or general reference controlling the predicate, with Swedish verbs not inflecting for person but showing tense and mood.

Subjektsled is contrasted with other sentence parts such as the predikativ or object phrases. Its status as the subject is determined by its semantic role (who or what performs or is described by the action) and its syntactic position within the clause.
