Subbatches

Subbatch is a division of a production batch or data batch into smaller units, enabling more granular tracking, testing, or processing. In manufacturing, subbatches are used to trace products throughout production, with each subbatch documented with its own identifiers, materials, processing conditions, and test results. Splitting batches into subbatches supports quality control, stability studies, and regulatory compliance by isolating variations that may occur during mixing, filling, or packaging. Subbatches may be assigned different lot numbers while sharing the same overall batch id, and their data are used to construct batch records and support recalls if a defect is found in a portion of the batch.

In data processing and machine learning, a batch may be divided into subbatches or micro-batches to fit memory constraints, parallelize computation, or stabilize training. Processing smaller subbatches reduces peak memory usage, allows incremental updates, and can improve convergence in some optimization schemes. Subbatches are common in stochastic gradient descent variants, where gradients are aggregated across several subbatches before an update.

Applications across industries include pharmaceutical manufacturing for traceability, food safety, cosmetics, and any process requiring component-level provenance. The concept emphasizes clear documentation, consistent labeling, and traceable lineage from raw materials to finished goods.
