In practice, the most common Studienlevels correspond to the main degree stages: Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate. In addition, historical or local programs may reference Diploma, Staatsexamen, or other professional qualifications as equivalent levels. Within the Bologna Process, the standard levels are Bachelor's (often 180–240 ECTS), Master's (typically 60–120 ECTS after a Bachelor's), and Doctoral studies, with the Doctorate functioning as a post-master level of highest qualification.

The Studienlevel is used to determine eligibility for admission to programs and modules, to define prerequisites, to structure progression, and to facilitate recognition and credit transfer for international students. It also helps distinguish between different tiers of study within a program, such as introductory or advanced modules, and it can appear in university information systems and course catalogs to clarify the expected prior knowledge and degree status.
