Strumica

Strumica is a city in North Macedonia and the administrative center of Strumica Municipality in the southeastern part of the country. It sits in the Strumica river valley near the border with Bulgaria and serves as a regional commercial and cultural hub within the Southeastern Statistical Region.

The area has a long history with influences from various civilizations. Evidence of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine and later periods can be found in surrounding sites, churches, and fortifications. In modern times, Strumica developed as a regional center during the 20th century and remains a focal point for administration, education, and culture in the region.

Economy and demographics Strumica’s economy is based on agriculture, trade, and light industry. The surrounding countryside is known for crops such as tobacco, grapes, vegetables, and fruits, while the city hosts markets, processing facilities, and service sector activity. The municipality’s population is in the tens of thousands, with the city housing a significant share of that total and serving as the core urban area.

Culture and landmarks Strumica hosts one of the region’s best-known cultural events, the Strumica Carnival, a major winter festival featuring masquerade parades and street performances. The city and surrounding area also contain historical churches, mosques, and cultural institutions, contributing to the region’s traditional music, cuisine, and crafts.

Transportation and climate Strumica is connected by road to Skopje and to neighboring towns and border checkpoints with Bulgaria. The region experiences a warm temperate climate, with hot summers and mild winters, supporting its agricultural activities.
