Streichersektion

Streichersektion is a German term that translates to "string section" in English. It refers to the group of string instruments that form a core component of a symphony orchestra, as well as other ensembles like chamber orchestras and string quartets. The string section is typically divided into several distinct instrument families, each playing a different range of pitches.

The highest-pitched instruments in a typical Streichersektion are the violins, which are further divided into first and second violins. The violas play in the middle-register, providing a warmer tone than the violins. The cellos are larger and play in a lower register, often carrying the melodic lines or providing harmonic support. The double basses, the largest and lowest-pitched members of the section, provide the foundational bass line.
