Stoðvöðva
Stoðvöðva is the Icelandic term for core muscles. This refers to a group of muscles that stabilize and support the trunk and pelvis. These muscles include the diaphragm, multifidus, transversus abdominis, pelvic floor muscles, and often the obliques and erector spinae. The primary function of the stoðvöðva is to maintain posture, stabilize the spine during movement, and transfer force between the upper and lower body. A strong and functional stoðvöðva is crucial for everyday activities, athletic performance, and preventing lower back pain. Weakness or dysfunction in these muscles can lead to instability, reduced mobility, and increased risk of injury. Exercises that target the stoðvöðva often involve controlled movements that challenge the body's ability to maintain a stable core. These can include planks, bridges, and exercises that require balancing. Proper engagement of the stoðvöðva is essential for executing movements efficiently and safely. Maintaining a healthy stoðvöðva is a key component of overall physical fitness and well-being.
