StoragePools

StoragePools are logical abstractions of physical storage resources that provide a unified interface for managing data storage across multiple devices. A StoragePool aggregates block or file storage from servers, disks, SAN arrays, or cloud storage, presenting it as a single pool that can be allocated to applications, virtual machines, or containers.

In a typical implementation, each storage pool is defined by a set of storage extents, which are the actual physical units of storage. Policies such as replication, striping, erasure coding, or caching may be applied to those extents to meet performance or durability requirements. The pool can also expose thin provisioning, allowing the allocation of logical capacity that is larger than the physical capacity, which is later backed by on-demand allocation when data is written.

Administrators configure storage pools through management tools or APIs, specifying the desired level of redundancy and performance. During provisioning, the system automatically selects the best extents based on the chosen policy. Many cloud and hypervisor platforms use storage pools to isolate storage for isolation, simplify backup, and support live migration of workloads.

Because a storage pool hides the underlying hardware complexity, developers can compile applications without knowing the details of physical disks or array locations. This abstraction also facilitates scaling, as new physical resources can be added to a pool without disturbing the applications. Consequently, storage pools are cornerstones in modern data center architecture, enabling efficient, flexible, and reliable storage provisioning.
