Stingless

Stingless bees, also known as meliponines, are a group of bees belonging to the tribe Meliponini. They are found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, with the greatest diversity in the Neotropics. Unlike their more well-known relatives, honey bees, stingless bees lack a functional sting, hence the name "stingless."

Stingless bees are small to medium-sized bees, typically measuring between 2 to 10 millimeters in length. They are known for their complex social structures and highly organized colonies, which can range from a few dozen to tens of thousands of individuals. Each colony has a single queen, who is responsible for laying eggs, and a workforce of female workers that perform various tasks such as foraging, nursing the young, and defending the colony.

These bees play a crucial role in their ecosystems as pollinators. They are particularly important for the pollination of certain plant species, including some crops. Stingless bees have been known to pollinate plants that other bees cannot, due to their unique foraging behaviors and the types of flowers they visit.

Stingless bees produce honey, although in smaller quantities than honey bees. This honey is highly prized in some cultures for its unique flavor and potential health benefits. The bees store their honey in small pots made of wax and resin, which they create within their nests.

Despite their ecological and economic importance, many species of stingless bees are threatened by habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these vital pollinators and their habitats.
