Stimulus-Response theory is a framework in psychology and behavioral sciences that posits behavior is a direct result of environmental stimuli and their associated responses. This approach emphasizes observable behavior over internal mental states and is associated with classical behaviorism.

Historically, the theory drew on Pavlov's classical conditioning, where a neutral stimulus paired with an unconditioned stimulus can elicit a conditioned response. In operant conditioning, B. F. Skinner showed that consequences such as reinforcement or punishment shape the likelihood of a voluntary response, strengthening the link between stimulus and response. In contemporary practice, stimulus-response concepts are applied in education, animal training, and human–computer interaction to study stimulus-response compatibility and task performance.

Criticisms and evolution: The model is criticized for neglecting cognitive processes, memory, and emotion; many modern theories adopt a cognitive-S-R perspective or the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model, which includes internal states and processing. Despite limitations, S-R concepts remain useful for describing simple, reflexive behaviors and for understanding learned associations in controlled settings.
