Stereoääniraitoja, or stereo soundtracks, refer to the method of recording and reproducing sound using two separate audio channels, a left and a right channel. This creates a sense of spaciousness and directionality for the listener, mimicking how humans perceive sound in the real world through two ears. When played back through a stereo system, the sound from the left channel is directed to the listener's left ear, and the sound from the right channel is directed to the listener's right ear. This separation allows for the placement of specific sounds within the soundscape, giving the impression that a sound is coming from a particular point between, to the left of, or to the right of the listener.

The development of stereo sound was a significant advancement in audio technology, moving beyond monaural (single channel) sound. In film and music production, stereo tracks enable more immersive listening experiences. For instance, in movies, dialogue might be centered, while sound effects like a car driving by can be panned from one side of the screen to the other, enhancing the realism. In music, instruments can be placed in different parts of the stereo field, contributing to a richer and more detailed mix. Consumer audio equipment, from turntables and CD players to modern digital streaming services and headphones, is designed to reproduce stereo audio. The common RCA connector for audio often features red for the right channel and white or black for the left channel, reflecting this two-channel standard.
