Stereoparity

Stereoparity refers to the relationship between the projections of two perspective views of a scene, where the left projection contains all the odd-numbered lines, and the right projection contains all the even-numbered lines of a 3D image. When viewed stereoscopically, these two projections combine to produce a single 3D image.

The term stereoparity is derived from the Greek words "stereos", meaning solid or three-dimensional, and "paraitos", meaning beside or next to. This concept is the basis for many 3D display technologies, including stereoscopy and autostereoscopy.

In stereoscopy, a scene is projected onto a screen from two different angles, typically left and right, to create the perception of depth. Each projection is designed to be viewed with one eye, with the other eye viewing the opposing projection. The distortions caused by the differences in the two projections are known as parallax, which creates the illusion of three-dimensionality.

Stereoparity is essential in stereoscopy to ensure that the correct depth cues are perceived by the viewer. As long as the input data meets the biprojection criteria, the 3D image can be accurately reconstructed. Stereoparity is not dependent on the color or texture of the images, which means that any 3D system relying on stereoparity can work with monochromatic or grayscale inputs.
